Why is it that you find yourself reading book after book about the same period of time, the same type of events, or the same venue? I have read two excellent books lately, very different, yet very much alike. Stefany lent me the book, The Book Thief, it is the story of a young German girl in Nazi Germany who lives through the WWII as one who has love and compassion for the Jewish People. It is a great book, and one that will bring tears to your eyes.
The second book is entitled, Sarah's Key. This too is a heart-breaking story of a young girl of 12 who is literally ripped from her mothers arms in Paris during the French Occupation. This story is of the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup of the French Jews. This is a part of history that I had not heard of previously. The story is told from the point of view of Sarah, a Frech born Jewess, and an American Journalist in Paris, on assignment to cover the anniversary of the Vel'd'Hiv. The far-reaching effects of Hitler never cease to shock me.
With all that is happening in the world today, I think it is important to not turn a blind eye to the pain and hatred being inflicted on one group of people from another. These books show how easily we can turn our heads, and not see, if we feel we are not being affected, on the other hand, it also shows the courage and strength of those willing to speak out and reach out. I choose to be the latter.
